Preoperative external tissue expansion for complex cranial reconstructions
Preoperative external tissue expansion for complex cranial reconstructions: Journal of Neurosurgery, Ahead of Print. OBJECTIVE Reconstruction of large solitary cranial defects after multiple craniotomies is challenging because scalp contraction generally requires more than simple subcutaneous undermining to ensure effective and cosmetically appealing closure. In plastic and reconstructive surgery, soft tissue expansion is considered the gold standard for reconstructing scalp defects; however, these techniques are not well known nor are they routinely practiced among neurosurgeons. ...περισσότερα »

CRCT1 regulated by microRNA-520 g inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis in esophageal squamous cell cancer
CRCT1 regulated by microRNA-520 g inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis in esophageal squamous cell cancer: AbstractCysteine-rich C-terminal 1 (CRCT1) is encoded by the epidermal differentiation complex (EDC), a gene cluster that was recently linked to esophageal cancer. However, the role of CRCT1 in esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC) and the underlying mechanism remain unclear. In the present study, we show that CRCT1 is downregulated in ESCC in association with TNM stage and lymph node metastasis. Restoring CRCT1 in ESCC cells by lentivirus-mediated gene transfer inhib...περισσότερα »

We designed a novel stent that has been used clinically since 2011, and we therefore performed a retrospective study to compare the therapeutic effects of this novel metal stent to a conventional partially covered metal stent in patients… Continue reading Novel stent in the palliation of malignant esophageal strictures: a retrospective study
Simple preoperative risk scale accurately predicts perioperative mortality following esophagectomy for malignancy
Summary Surgery remains one of the major treatment options available to patients with esophageal cancer, with high mortality in certain cohorts. The aim of this study was to develop a simple preoperative risk scale based on patient factors, hospital factors, and tumor pathology to predict the risk of perioperative mortality following esophagectomy for malignancy. The… Continue reading Simple preoperative risk scale accurately predicts perioperative mortality following esophagectomy for malignancy
Aspirin prevents atrophy of esophageal nitrergic myenteric neurons in a mouse model of chronic Chagas disease
Summary The consequences of using aspirin (ASA) for the pathogenesis of Chagas disease are unclear. This study evaluated the effects of treatment of Chagas disease with ASA on the esophageal nitrergic myenteric neuron population and esophageal wall in mice. We observed that treatment of chagasic infection with ASA protects the esophageal myenteric neurons from the… Continue reading Aspirin prevents atrophy of esophageal nitrergic myenteric neurons in a mouse model of chronic Chagas disease

Wild-type phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10 improved the sensitivity of cells to rapamycin through regulating phosphorylation of Akt in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
Summary Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in China, but the etiology and mode of carcinogenesis of this disease remain poorly understood. Phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN), as a negative regulator of Akt/mTOR pathway, frequently mutates or is inactive in many cancers. Although mTOR… Continue reading Wild-type phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10 improved the sensitivity of cells to rapamycin through regulating phosphorylation of Akt in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
Phase I/II study of divided-dose docetaxel, cisplatin and fluorouracil for patients with recurrent or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus
Summary Squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus (SCCE) has a poor prognosis compared with other gastrointestinal cancers. Many patients present with locoregional unresectable or metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. For these patients with metastatic esophageal cancer, chemotherapy is generally indicated. The aim of this phase I/II study was to evaluate the efficacy and… Continue reading Phase I/II study of divided-dose docetaxel, cisplatin and fluorouracil for patients with recurrent or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus
