Abstract *Purpose* Ultrasound (US) calibration is the process of determining the unknown transformation from a coordinate frame such as the robot's tooltip to the US image frame and is a necessary task for any robotic or tracked US system. US calibration requires submillimeter-range accuracy for most applications, but it is a time-consuming and repetitive task. We provide a new framework for automatic US calibration with robot assistance and without the need for temporal calibration. Method US calibration based on active echo (AE) phantom was previously proposed, and its superior... περισσότερα »

Future therapies for pemphigus vulgaris: Rituximab and beyond

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΑισθητική ΔερματολογίαΠριν από 15 δευτερόλεπτα
The conventional treatment for patients with pemphigus vulgaris (PV) centers on global immunosuppression, such as the use of steroids and other immunosuppressive drugs, to decrease titers of antidesmoglein autoantibodies responsible for the acantholytic blisters. Global immunosuppressants, however, cause serious side effects. The emergence of anti-CD20 biologic medications, such as rituximab, as an adjunct to conventional therapy has shifted the focus to targeted destruction of autoimmune B cells. from #Dermatology via alexandrossfakianakis on Inoreader http://ift.tt/22WIkFR via ... περισσότερα »

Electrical Stimulation to Enhance Axon Regeneration After Peripheral Nerve Injuries in Animal Models and Humans

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝευρολογία κ' ΝευροχειρουργικήΠριν από 51 δευτερόλεπτα
Abstract Injured peripheral nerves regenerate their lost axons but functional recovery in humans is frequently disappointing. This is so particularly when injuries require regeneration over long distances and/or over long time periods. Fat replacement of chronically denervated muscles, a commonly accepted explanation, does not account for poor functional recovery. Rather, the basis for the poor nerve regeneration is the transient expression of growth-associated genes that accounts for declining regenerative capacity of neurons and the regenerative support of Schwann cells over tim... περισσότερα »

Microtia, malformation, deformity, and partial or complete loss of the pinna may be due to various congenital or acquired factors. In adult patients, surgical reconstruction of the missing pinna is difficult and the results are often far from satisfactory. An implant-retained auricular prosthesis is a suitable alternative. A retrospective study of eight patients treated with implant-retained auricular prostheses was performed. Out-of-plane (OOP) ultrasound guided injections are often cited as more difficult than in-plane (IP) ultrasound guided injections, particularly for the novice ultrasonographer. In certain circumstances, the OOP approach is required due to the constraints of adjacent anatomical structures. To date, only the "walkdown" approach has been detailed in the literature as a means to improve accuracy with the OOP approach. Interstitial 6q25 microdeletion syndrome: ARID1B is the key gene

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοEvolution of a geneΠριν από 1 ώρα
Interstitial deletions of the long arm of chromosome 6 are rare. Clinically, these deletions are considered to be part of a unique microdeletion syndrome associated with intellectual disability and speech impairment, typical dysmorphic features, structural anomalies of the brain, microcephaly, and non-specific multiple organ anomalies. The critical region for the interstitial 6q microdeletion phenotype was mapped to 6q24–6q25, particularly the 6q25.3 region containing the genes *ARID1B* and *ZDHHC14*. It has been hypothesized that haploinsufficiency of these genes impairs normal ... περισσότερα »

Publication date: Available online 11 January 2016 *Source:*Trends in Cognitive Sciences Author(s): Arjen Stolk, Lennart Verhagen, Ivan Toni We share our thoughts with other minds, but we do not understand how. Having a common language certainly helps, but infants' and tourists' communicative success clearly illustrates that sharing thoughts does not require signals with a pre-assigned meaning. In fact, human communicators jointly build a fleeting conceptual space in which signals are a means to seek and provide evidence for mutual understanding. Recent work has started to capture t...περισσότερα »

Microstructural asymmetry of the corticospinal tracts predicts right–left differences in circle drawing skill in right-handed adolescents

Abstract Most humans show a strong preference to use their right hand, but strong preference for the right hand does not necessarily imply a strong right–left asymmetry in manual proficiency (i.e., dexterity). Here we tested the hypothesis that intra-individual asymmetry of manual proficiency would be reflected in microstructural differences between the right and left corticospinal […]

The white matter query language: a novel approach for describing human white matter anatomy

Abstract We have developed a novel method to describe human white matter anatomy using an approach that is both intuitive and simple to use, and which automatically extracts white matter tracts from diffusion MRI volumes. Further, our method simplifies the quantification and statistical analysis of white matter tracts on large diffusion MRI databases. This work […]

Propagation of spontaneous slow-wave activity across columns and layers of the adult rat barrel cortex in vivo

Abstract During slow-wave sleep, neocortical networks exhibit self-organized activity switching between periods of concurrent spiking (up-states) and periods of network silence (down-states), a phenomenon also occurring under the effects of different anesthetics and in in vitro brain slice preparations. Although this type of ongoing activity has been implicated into important functions such as memory consolidation […]
