miRNA involvement in angiogenesis in age-related macular degeneration

Abstract Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in the elderly. Late-stage AMD is characterized by choroidal neovascularization (CNV). miR-93 appears to play a role in regulating vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A), a known factor involved in neovascularization. Understanding its biological significance might enable development of therapeutic interventions for diseases like AMD. […]

Satellite cell activation and apoptosis in skeletal muscle from severely burned children

Abstract Severe burns result in profound skeletal muscle atrophy; persistent muscle loss and weakness are major complications that hamper recovery from burn injury. Many factors contribute to the erosion of muscle mass following burn trauma, and we propose that an impaired muscle satellite cell response is key in the etiology of burn-induced cachexia. Summary What is known and objectives Adverse clinical outcomes have been associated with cumulative anticholinergic burden (to which low-potency as well as high-potency anticholinergic medicines contribute). The clinical indications for which anticholinergic medicines are prescribed (and thus the 'phenotype' of patients with anticholinergic burden) have not been established. We sought to establish the overall prevalence of prescribing of anticholinergic medicines, the prevalence of prescribing of low-, medium- and high-potency anticholinergic medicines, and the clinical indication... περισσότερα »

Mechanical Stretching Promotes Skin Tissue Regeneration via Enhancing Mesenchymal Stem Cell Homing and Transdifferentiation

Skin tissue expansion is a clinical procedure for skin regeneration to reconstruct cutaneous defects that can be accompanied by severe complications. The transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has been proven effective in promoting skin expansion and helping to ameliorate complications; however, systematic understanding of its mechanism remains unclear. MSCs from luciferase-Tg Lewis rats were […]

Rho Kinase Inhibition Is Essential During In Vitro Neurogenesis and Promotes Phenotypic Rescue of Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Neurons With Oligophrenin-1 Loss of Function

Rho-GTPases have relevant functions in various aspects of neuronal development, such as differentiation, migration, and synaptogenesis. Loss of function of the oligophrenin-1 gene (OPHN1) causes X-linked intellectual disability with cerebellar hypoplasia and leads to hyperactivation of the rho kinase (ROCK) pathway. ROCK mainly acts through phosphorylation of the myosin phosphatase targeting subunit 1, triggering actin-myosin […]

Concise Review: Pancreatic Cancer and Bone Marrow-Derived Stem Cells

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma remains one of the most challenging diseases of modern gastroenterology, and, even though considerable effort has been put into understanding its pathogenesis, the exact molecular mechanisms underlying the development and/or systemic progression of this malignancy still remain unclear. Recently, much attention has been paid to the potential role of bone marrow-derived stem cells […]

Stem Cell Surface Marker Expression Defines Late Stages of Reprogramming to Pluripotency in Human Fibroblasts

Our current understanding of the induction of pluripotency by defined factors indicates that this process occurs in discrete stages characterized by specific alterations in the cellular transcriptome and epigenome. However, the final phase of the reprogramming process is incompletely understood. We sought to generate tools to characterize the transition to a fully reprogramed state. We […]

Targeting the cAMP and Transforming Growth Factor-{beta} Pathway Increases Proliferation to Promote Re-Epithelialization of Human Stem Cell-Derived Retinal Pigment Epithelium

Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cell integrity is critical to the maintenance of retinal function. Many retinopathies such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are caused by the degeneration or malfunction of the RPE cell layer. Replacement of diseased RPE with healthy, stem cell-derived RPE is a potential therapeutic strategy for treating AMD. Human embryonic stem cells […]

Functional Plasticity of Adipose-Derived Stromal Cells During Development of Obesity

Obesity is a major risk factor for a number of chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Expansion of the adipose mass requires adipocyte precursor cells that originate from multipotent adipose-derived stromal cells (ASCs), which in turn also participate in repair activities. ASC function might decline in a disease milieu, but it remains unclear […]

Embryological Origin of Human Smooth Muscle Cells Influences Their Ability to Support Endothelial Network Formation

SMCs of three distinct embryological origins were derived from an mStrawberry-expressing hESC line and were cocultured […]

The Neurofilament-Derived Peptide NFL-TBS.40-63 Targets Neural Stem Cells and Affects Their Properties

Targeting neural stem cells (NSCs) in the adult brain represents a promising approach for developing new regenerative strategies, because these cells can proliferate, self-renew, and differentiate into new neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes. Previous work showed that the NFL-TBS.40-63 peptide, corresponding to the sequence of a tubulin-binding site on neurofilaments, can target glioblastoma cells, where it […]

Three-dimensional fracture pattern analysis of the Obwegeser and Dal Pont bilateral sagittal split osteotomy

Alexandros SfakianakisστοHead and Neck Diseases by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 2 ώρες
The Obwegeser and Dal Pont modification of the bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) is a well-established procedure in orthognathic surgery. The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze the actual fracture patterns achieved with BSSO by Obwegeser and Dal Pont modification using postoperative cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) datasets from 100 patients. A total of 200 split osteotomies were assessed, which could be categorized into nine different split patterns. Only one of the observed split fractures (0.5%) followed exactly the fracture line described by Obweges... περισσότερα »

Cranial Maxillofac Trauma Reconstruction DOI: 10.1055/s-0036-1584405 Craniomaxillofacial injuries can be complex, requiring a multidisciplinary approach. The primary survey is always the first step in trauma management prior to proceeding with further evaluation and treatment. A 26-year-old man presented with a penetrating nail gun injury through the oral and nasal cavities. He did not present in extremis but required elective endotracheal intubation for intraoperative assessment and treatment. Airway management was enhanced by the use of lingual nerve and inferior alveolar nerve b... περισσότερα »

Maternal biomarkers of methylation status and non-syndromic orofacial cleft risk: a meta-analysis

Alexandros SfakianakisστοHead and Neck Diseases by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 2 ώρες
Animal models have shown evidence of the role of maternal methyl donor status and its metabolism (one-carbon metabolism) in normal embryonic maxillofacial development. Nevertheless, studies in humans have shown conflicting results for the association of maternal methylation status biomarkers in the aetiology of the main craniofacial birth defects: non-syndromic orofacial clefts (NSOFCs). The aim of this study was to perform a meta-analysis assessing the relationship between maternal levels of methylation status biomarkers (plasma and erythrocyte folates and plasma vitamin B12 and ... περισσότερα »

Guided bone regeneration using individualized ceramic sheets

Alexandros SfakianakisστοHead and Neck Diseases by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 2 ώρες
Guided bone regeneration (GBR) describes the use of membranes to regenerate bony defects. A membrane for GBR needs to be biocompatible, cell-occlusive, non-toxic, and mouldable, and possess space-maintaining properties including stability. The purpose of this pilot study was to describe a new method of GBR using individualized ceramic sheets to perfect bone regeneration prior to implant placement; bone regeneration was assessed using traditional histology and three-dimensional (3D) volumetric changes in the bone and soft tissue. http://ift.tt/28ZDB0T http://ift.tt/293FsEC from... περισσότερα »

Modified alar base cinch suture fixation at the bilateral lower border of the piriform rim after a maxillary Le Fort I osteotomy

Alexandros SfakianakisστοHead and Neck Diseases by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 2 ώρες
Classic cinch suture narrowing of the nasal alar base by medially suturing the bilateral nasolabial soft tissue with one long suture has a limited effect. The modified cinch method described in the present study anchors non-absorbable sutures to the bilateral lower border of the piriform rim and provides optimal direction, position, and stability. The sutures can be shortened and the strength kept stable while the surgical wounds heal. Separate bilateral sutures can also reduce interference and distortion from nasotracheal intubation and make the nasolabial profile more symmetrical... περισσότερα »
