The Role of NOD1 and NOD2 in Host Defense against Chlamydial Infection
Chlamydial species are common intracellular parasites that cause various diseases, mainly characterized by persistent infection, which lead to inflammatory responses modulated by pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). The best understood PRRs are the extracellular Toll-like receptors, but recent significant advances have focused on two important proteins, NOD1 and NOD2, which are members of the intracellular nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain receptor family and are capable of triggering the host innate immune signaling pathways. This results in the production of pro-inflamm... περισσότερα »

Food allergy is associated with high dietary advanced glycation end products and pro-glycating dietary sugars that mimic alarmins
“The False Alarm” hypothesis: The incidence of food allergy has risen dramatically in the last few decades in Westernized developed countries. We propose that the Western life style and diet promote innate danger signals and immune responses through the production of “alarmins”. Alarmins are endogenous molecules secreted from cells undergoing non-programmed cell death that signal tissue and cell damage. High Molecular Group Box 1 (HMGB1) is a major alarmin that binds to the Receptor for Advanced Glycation End products (RAGE).

Excess deaths due to occupation
Harris *et al*1 provide useful new data for evaluating which occupational hazards are most deadly, and how this has changed over time. They have estimated excess deaths for different occupational groups, presumably exposed to specific hazards, via calculation of proportional mortality ratio (PMRs) (observed vs expected deaths) from death certificates, for causes of death strongly associated with occupations. Excess deaths (observed minus expected) over three study periods (1979–1990, 1991–2000 and 2001–2010) are presented (excess/observed deaths is the attributable fraction (AF) a... περισσότερα »
Simple benchmark for mesothelioma projection for Great Britain

Methods We compare two Poisson models: a response-only model with an age-cohort specification and a multinomial model with epidemiologically motivated frequencies. Results The response-only model has 5% higher peak mortality than the dose–response model. The former performs slightly better in out-of-sample comparison. Conclusions Mortality is predicted to peak at about 2100 deaths around 2017 among... περισσότερα »
The global epidemic of chronic kidney disease: a call for action
While the Ebola and Zika viruses have made national and international headlines in recent months, another epidemic of larger magnitude is quietly devastating agricultural communities in developing countries worldwide. In Central America, the death toll from a mysterious type of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is estimated to be 20 000 in just 10 years.1 Unlike the CKD seen in developed countries, which is typically linked to hypertension and diabetes, this disease appears to be multifactorial and disproportionately afflicts young men of working age. In El Salvador, CKD is the second ... περισσότερα »

Linear transformation of the encoding mechanism for light-intensity underlies the paradoxical enhancement of cortical visual responses by sevoflurane
Abstract General anaesthetics, which are expected to silence brain activity, often spare sensory responses. To evaluate differential effects of anaesthetics on spontaneous and sensory-evoked cortical activity, we characterized their modulation by sevoflurane and propofol. Power spectra and bust-suppression ratio from EEG data were used to evaluate anaesthesia depth. ON and OFF cortical responses were elicited by light-pulses of variable intensity, duration and frequency, during light and deep states of anaesthesia. Both anaesthetics reduced spontaneous cortical activity but sevoflur... περισσότερα »
Potential mediators linking gut bacteria to metabolic health: a critical view

Most of the current literature on gut bacteria consists of cross-sectional and correlative studies, rendering it difficult to make any causal inferences as to the influence of gut bacteria on obesity and related metabolic disorders. Interventions with germ-free animals, treatment with antibiotic agents, and microbial transfer experiments have provided some evidence that disturbances in gut bacteria may causally ... περισσότερα »
