Cadaveric dissection in oral and maxillofacial surgery: is it time for a new approach?

Learning anatomy by dissection of cadavers is an essential part of surgical training. Traditionally such courses that involve the transfer of skills are designed by surgeons with an interest in teaching. Currently the clinical pressures in the NHS mean that it is becoming more difficult to run skill-based courses (although similar pressures do seem to be reflected internationally). Those clinicians involved in the organisation of courses in anatomy will recognise difficulties relating to time, funding, appropriate facilities, and the participation of trainees.
