The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of CT in hypertensive ovariectomized rats undergoing fructose overload in blood pressure […]

Aging augments renal vasoconstrictor response to orthostatic stress in humans

The ability of the human body to maintain arterial blood pressure (BP) during orthostatic stress is determined by several reflex neural mechanisms. Renal vasoconstriction progressively increases during graded elevations in lower body negative pressure (LBNP). This sympathetically mediated response redistributes blood flow to the systemic circulation to maintain BP. However, how healthy aging affects the […]

Increased placental fatty acid transporter 6 and binding protein 3 expression and fetal liver lipid accumulation in a mouse model of obesity in pregnancy

Obesity in pregnancy is associated with increased fetal growth and adiposity, which, in part, is determined by transplacental nutrient supply. Trophoblast uptake and intracellular trafficking of lipids are dependent on placental fatty acid transport proteins (FATP), translocase (FAT/CD36), and fatty acid binding proteins (FABP). We hypothesized that maternal obesity in mice leads to increased placental […]

Abstract With the number of prognostic and predictive genetic markers in neuro-oncology steadily growing, the need for comprehensive molecular analysis of neuropathology samples has vastly increased. We therefore developed a customized enrichment/hybrid-capture-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) gene panel comprising the entire coding and selected intronic and promoter regions of 130 genes recurrently altered in brain tumors, […]

Astrocytes: a central element in neurological diseases

Abstract The neurone-centred view of the past disregarded or downplayed the role of astroglia as a primary component in the pathogenesis of neurological diseases. As this concept is changing, so is also the perceived role of astrocytes in the healthy and diseased brain and spinal cord. We have started to unravel the different signalling mechanisms […]

Elevated pCO2 causes a shift towards more toxic microcystin variants in nitrogen limited Microcystis aeruginosa

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΛοίμωξηΠριν από 1 ώρα
Elevated *p*CO2 may promote phytoplankton growth, and potentially alleviate carbon limitation during dense blooms. Under nitrogen-limited conditions, elevated *p*CO2 may furthermore alter the phytoplankton carbon: nitrogen (C:N) balance and thereby the synthesis of secondary metabolites, such as cyanobacterial toxins. A common group of these toxins are microcystins, with variants that not only differ in C:N stoichiometry, but also in toxicity. Here, we hypothesized that elevated *p*CO2 will increase the cellular C:N ratios of cyanobacteria, thereby promoting the more toxic microcy... περισσότερα »

In the environment microorganisms are living in diverse communities, which are impacted by the prevailing environmental conditions. Here we present a study investigating the effect of low pH and elevated uranium concentration on the dynamics of an artificial microbial consortium. The members ( *Caulobacter* sp. OR37, *Asinibacterium* sp. OR53, *Ralstonia* sp. OR214 and *Rhodanobacter* sp. OR444) were isolated from a uranium contaminated and acidic subsurface sediment. In pure culture *Ralstonia* sp. OR214 had the highest growth rate at neutral and low pH and only *Caulobacter* sp. ...περισσότερα »

Effects and mode of action of chitosan and ivy fruit saponins on the microbiome, fermentation and methanogenesis in the rumen simulation technique

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΛοίμωξηΠριν από 1 ώρα
This study investigates the effects of supplementing a control diet (CON) with chitosan (CHI) or ivy fruit saponins (IVY) as natural feed additives. Both additives had similar abilities to decrease rumen methanogenesis (–42% and –40%, respectively) using different mechanisms: due to its anti-microbial and nutritional properties CHI promoted a shift in the fermentation pattern towards propionate production which explained about two thirds of the decrease in methanogenesis. This shift was achieved by a simplification of the structure in the bacterial community and a substitution of ... περισσότερα »

High-Frequency Acceleration: Therapeutic Tool to Preserve Bone following Tooth Extractions

A common problem in clinical dentistry is the significant and rapid bone loss that occurs after tooth extraction. Currently there is no solution for the long-term preservation of alveolar bone. Previously, we showed that high-frequency acceleration (HFA) has an osteogenic effect on healthy alveolar bone. However, it is not known if HFA can preserve alveolar bone after extraction without negatively affecting wound healing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of HFA on alveolar bone loss and the rate of bone formation after tooth extraction. Eighty-five adult Spragu... περισσότερα »

We used system identification techniques to show the weight and the adaptive process of weight change of proprioceptive information during standing balance with age and specific diseases. Ten healthy young subjects (aged between 20 and 30 yr) […]

Dynamics of visual receptive fields in the macaque frontal eye field

Neuronal receptive fields (RFs) provide the foundation for understanding systems-level sensory processing. In early visual areas, investigators have mapped RFs in detail using stochastic stimuli and sophisticated analytical approaches. Much less is known about RFs in prefrontal cortex. Visual stimuli used for mapping RFs in prefrontal cortex tend to cover a small range of spatial […]
