Sensors, Vol. 16, Pages 180: A Personal, Distributed Exposimeter: Procedure for Design, Calibration, Validation, and Application

Alexandros SfakianakisστοHead and Neck Diseases by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 1 λεπτό
This paper describes, for the first time, the procedure for the full design, calibration, uncertainty analysis, and practical application of a personal, distributed exposimeter (PDE) for the detection of personal exposure in the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) downlink (DL) band around 900 MHz (GSM 900 DL). The PDE is a sensor that consists of several body-worn antennas. The on-body location of these antennas is investigated using numerical simulations and calibration measurements in an anechoic chamber. The calibration measurements and the simulations result in a de...περισσότερα »

Aerospace, Vol. 3, Pages 5: Target Tracking in 3-D Using Estimation Based Nonlinear Control Laws for UAVs

Alexandros SfakianakisστοHead and Neck Diseases by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 1 λεπτό
This paper presents an estimation based backstepping like control law design for an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to track a moving target in 3-D space. A ground-based sensor or an onboard seeker antenna provides range, azimuth angle, and elevation angle measurements to a chaser UAV that implements an extended Kalman filter (EKF) to estimate the full state of the target. A nonlinear controller then utilizes this estimated target state and the chaser's state to provide speed, flight path, and course/heading angle commands to the chaser UAV. Tracking performance with respect to meas...περισσότερα »

Gels, Vol. 2, Pages 7: Supramolecular Assembly of pH-Sensitive Triphenylene Derived π-Gelators and Their Application as Molecular Template for the Preparation of Silica Nanotubes

Alexandros SfakianakisστοHead and Neck Diseases by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 1 λεπτό
The gelation properties and mode of self-assembly of six asymmetrical hexaether triphenylene derivatives mono-functionalized with carboxylic and primary amine groups were investigated. The presence of a carboxylic and amine group attached to the triphenylene core generated stable, thermo- and pH-sensitive supramolecular π-organogels with a reversible response to both stimuli. In order to understand the gelation process, we studied the effect of the spacer length and found a different gelation scope for the acid and basic derivatives that accounts for a different supramolecular sel... περισσότερα »

Use of butane-isobutane refrigerant spray in the management of a mucocoele in a visually impaired child

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 2 δευτερόλεπτα
Use of butane-isobutane refrigerant spray in the management of a mucocoele in a visually impaired child: Mucocoeles are commonly observed lesions in children and young adults. Conventional management using a scalpel aims at enucleation, requiring psychological preparation of the parent as well as the child because of inherent fear and apprehension towards surgery. This is still more complex in children with visual impairment. The other management techniques are laser, cryotherapy and micromarsupialisation, management strategies that, being painless and tolerable, reduce the anxiety...περισσότερα »

Entrapment of soft tissue: a new technique to improve the stability of malar augmentation with hydroxyapatite: As far as we know the first reports of the use of hydroxyapatite for malar augmentation were published in 1986.1 Its use in the form of granules has since been shown to produce a more predictable result with fewer complications than implant blocks.2 The granules also permit moulding after implantation, so that the material becomes compacted and approximates closely to the surface of the bone. Moulding is possible because the hydroxyapatite is packed under the periosteum and... περισσότερα »

In this report, a rare case of mesenteric lymphangioma mimicking an ovarian cystic mass, discovered as an incidental finding on orthopaedic MRI in an adult female, is presented. The report highlights the sometimes difficult diagnostic process of pelvic cystic masses, due to an extensive differential diagnosis and the fact that imaging is o...περισσότερα »

Co-occurrence of biphenotypic acute leukaemia, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency and haemoglobin E trait in a single child

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΟγκολογίαΠριν από 49 δευτερόλεπτα
Acute leukaemias occur as the result of clonal expansion subsequent to transformation and arrest at a normal differentiation stage of haematopoietic precursors, which commit to a single lineage, such as myeloid or B-lymphoid or T-lymphoid cells. Biphenotypic acute leukaemia (BAL) constitutes a biologically different group of leukaemia arising from a precursor stem cell and co-expressing more than one lineage specific marker. The present report describes a child with unusual co-occurrence of biphenotypic (B-precursor cell and Myeloid) acute leukaemia, haemoglobin E trait and glucos... περισσότερα »

We present the case of a 15-year-old girl with a left T7 spinal epidural arteriovenous fistula (SEAVF), in whom bilateral and symmetric isolated T9 dorsospinal arteries (DAs) were incidentally documented, each providing a significant contribution to the anterior spinal artery. Recognizing the existence of isolated DAs of direct aortic origin is critical, both for the diagnostic evaluation and for the management of spinal vascular diseases. Notably, isolated DAs tend to branch off significant radiculomedullary arteries, which vascularize the normal spinal cord but have also been sho... περισσότερα »

Abstract A common strategy when searching for cognitive enhancing drugs has been to target the NMDA receptor, given its putative role in synaptic plasticity and learning. Evidence in favour of this approach has come primarily from studies with rodents using behavioural assays like the Morris watermaze. D-amino acid oxidase (DAO) degrades neutral D-amino acids such as D-serine, the primary endogenous co-agonist acting at the glycine site of the synaptic NMDA receptor. Inhibiting DAO could therefore provide an effective and viable means of enhancing cognition, particularly in disorder... περισσότερα »

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is the principal organelle responsible for correct protein folding, a step in protein synthesis that is critical for the functional conformation of proteins. ER stress is a primary feature of secretory cells and is involved in the pathogenesis of numerous human diseases, such as certain neurodegenerative and cardiometabolic disorders. The unfolded protein response (UPR) is a defense mechanism to attenuate ER stress and maintain the homeostasis of the organism. Two major degradation systems, including the proteasome and autophagy, are involved in this ... περισσότερα »

Semiconductor TiO2 photocatalysis has attracted much attention due to its potential application in solving the problems of environmental pollution. In this paper, thiourea (CH4N2S) modified anatase TiO2 nanorods were fabricated by calcination of the mixture of TiO2 nanorods and thiourea at 600 °C for 2 h. It was found that only N element was doped into the lattice of TiO2 nanorods. With increasing the weight ratio of thiourea to TiO2 (R) from 0 to 8, the light-harvesting ability of the photocatalyst steady increases. Both the crystallization and photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nan... περισσότερα »

Sensors, Vol. 16, Pages 181: Accuracy and Resolution Analysis of a Direct Resistive Sensor Array to FPGA Interface

Resistive sensor arrays are formed by a large number of individual sensors which are distributed in different ways. This paper proposes a direct connection between an FPGA and a resistive array distributed in M rows and N columns, without the need of analog-to-digital converters to obtain resistance values in the sensor and where the conditioning circuit is reduced to the use of a capacitor in each of the columns of the matrix. The circuit allows parallel measurements of the N resistors which form each of the rows of the array, eliminating the resistive crosstalk which is typical ... περισσότερα »
