Background Eosinophils are thought to play a significant role in nasal polyposis, but the exact mechanism by which they contribute to polyposis remains unclear. Therefore, we proposed to test the hypothesis that peripheral blood eosinophilia (PBE) is a surrogate and biomarker for polyp load. To do this, we examined whether PBE levels correlate with nasal […]

Abstract The motor neurons in the spinal cord of an echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) have been mapped in Nissl-stained sections from spinal cord segments defined by spinal nerve anatomy. A medial motor column of motor neurons is found at all spinal cord levels, and a hypaxial column is found at most levels. The organization of the […]

Chronic Rejection in Human Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation (Hand and Face Recipients): An Update.
Chronic Rejection in Human Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation (Hand and Face Recipients): An Update.: Vascularized composite tissue allografts (VCA) have become a viable option to restore severely damaged parts of the body that cannot be repaired with conventional surgical techniques. Acute rejection develops frequently in the early postgraft period both in human and experimental VCA, but the possibility of human VCA to undergo chronic rejection (CR) remained initially unknown. The experience gained over the years shows that, similar to solid organ transplants (SOT), human VC...περισσότερα »

Immunodominant West Nile Virus T Cell Epitopes
Are Fewer in Number and Fashionably Late [INFECTIOUS DISEASE AND HOST RESPONSE]: Class I HLA molecules mark infected cells for immune targeting by presenting pathogen-encoded peptides on the cell surface. Characterization of viral peptides unique to infected cells is important for understanding CD8+ T cell responses and for the development of T cell–based immunotherapies. Having previously reported a series of West Nile virus (WNV) epitopes that are naturally presented by HLA-A*02:01, in this study we generated TCR mimic (TCRm) mAbs to three of these peptide/HLA complexes—the imm... περισσότερα »

Regulatory roles of mast cells in immune responses
Regulatory roles of mast cells in immune responses: AbstractMast cells are important immune cells for host defense through activation of innate immunity (via toll-like receptors or complement receptors) and acquired immunity (via FcεRI). Conversely, mast cells also act as effector cells that exacerbate development of allergic or autoimmune disorders. Yet, several lines of evidence show that mast cells act as regulatory cells to suppress certain inflammatory diseases. Here, we review the mechanisms by which mast cells suppress diseases.

Helicobacter pylori infection in children
should it be carefully assessed?: The prevalence of H. pylori infection, mainly acquired during childhood and may be persisting throughout life, has been found high in developing countries; this high prevalence is related to low socioeconomic status. The persistence of bacterium exposure is related to gastritis and other severe complications including peptic ulcer, lymphoma MALT and gastric cancer, which are rarely present in the pediatric age due to a lower inflammatory and immunological response. Virulence factors, host gastric mucosal factors, and the natural environment of pati... περισσότερα »
The blood pressure (BP) fluctuation
Doubts and difficulties in studying blood pressure variability: The blood pressure (BP) fluctuation was first noticed in the 18th century. However, its clinical significance did not get attention until recent years. The increase in BP variability (BPV) is possibly more valuable than the increase in BP level for predicting damages in target organs. Moreover, attenuating BPV is more important than decreasing the BP level. However, the concept of BPV was not used in any related guideline for diagnosing, defining, and grading the risk of hypertension, which is due to the understanding ... περισσότερα »

Athletes may use one of the various altitude training strategies to improve exercise performance. The scientific support for such strategies is however not as sound as one would perhaps imagine. The question addressed in this review is whether altitude training should be recommended to elite athletes or not. This article is protected by copyright. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a robust UPLC-MS/MS method for the simultaneous determination of ADMA and SDMA in human serum. Chromatographic separation after butyl ester derivatization was achieved on an Acquity UPLC BEH C18 column, followed by tandem mass spectrometric detection. Abstract In classic anatomic atlases, the spinal cord is standardly represented in its anatomical form with symmetrically emerging anterior and posterior roots, which at the level of the intervertebral foramen combine into the spinal nerves. The parts of the cord delimited by the boundaries of the roots are called segments or myelomeres. Associated with their […]

NSD1 duplication in Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS): Molecular karyotyping in patients with SRS features
Abstract Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) is a growth retardation syndrome characterized by intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation, relative macrocephaly and protruding forehead, body asymmetry and feeding difficulties. Nearly 50% of cases show a hypomethylation in 11p15.5, in 10% maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 7 is present. A significant number of patients with SRS features also exhibit chromosomal aberrations. We analysed 43 individuals referred for SRS genetic testing by molecular karyotyping. mRNA-based Detection of Rare CFTR Mutations Improves Genetic Diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis in Populations with High Genetic Heterogeneity
Abstract Even with advent of Next Generation Sequencing complete sequencing of large disease-associated genes and intronic regions is economically not feasible. This is the case of CFTR, the gene responsible for Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Yet, to confirm a CF diagnosis, proof of CFTR dysfunction needs to be obtained, namely by identification of two disease-causing mutations. Moreover, with the advent of mutation-based therapies, genotyping is an essential tool for CF disease management. There is however, still an unmet need to genotype CF patients by fast, comprehensive and cost-effecti...περισσότερα »
