Salmonella enterica Subspecies diarizonae Maxillary Sinusitis in a Snake Handler: First Report

In this study, we report the first case of reptile-associated maxillary sinusitis due to Salmonella enterica subspecies diarizonae in a snake handler and the third case of salmonella-associated sinusitis worldwide. The case highlights the potential of respiratory transmission and atypical salmonellosis presentations. from #AlexandrosSfakianakis via Alexandros G.Sfakianakis on Inoreader http://ift.tt/1Zgj3mj via IFTTT

Bilateral Subpectoral Interfascial Plane Catheters for Analgesia for Sternal Fractures: A Case Report.

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοAnaesthesiologyΠριν από 3 δευτερόλεπτα
Objectives: Sternal fractures occur after deceleration injuries such as falls and road traffic accidents. Recovery from isolated fractures is excellent, but mortality increases dramatically with concurrent chest injuries such as rib fractures and soft tissue injuries. Short-term complications include chest pain, which prevents patients from taking deep breaths and coughing, thereby predisposing them to chest infections. Case Report: We present a case of a 73-year-old woman with sternal fracture in whom enteral analgesia was inadequate and who was intolerant to intravenous opiates. C... περισσότερα »

Cardiac troponins and volatile anaesthetics in coronary artery bypass graft surgery: A systematic review, meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοAnaesthesiologyΠριν από 3 δευτερόλεπτα
[image: image]BACKGROUND: Reports from animal studies indicate that volatile anaesthetics protect the myocardium against the effects of acute ischaemia–reperfusion injury by reducing infarct size. This cardioprotective effect in the clinical setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, where the heart is subjected to global ischaemia–reperfusion injury, remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to demonstrate that clinical studies investigating the cardioprotective effect of volatile anaesthetics on cardiac troponins in CABG are no longer warranted. [image: image]BACKGROUND: In current preoperative fasting guidelines, coffee with milk is still regarded by many as solid food. Evidence on the consequences for gastric volume of adding milk to coffee 2 h before anaesthesia is still weak. Targeting oliguria reversal in perioperative restrictive fluid management does not influence the occurrence of renal dysfunction: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοAnaesthesiologyΠριν από 3 δευτερόλεπτα
[image: image]BACKGROUND: Interest in perioperative fluid restriction has increased, but it could lead to hypovolaemia. Urine output is viewed as a surrogate for renal perfusion and is frequently used to guide perioperative fluid therapy. However, the rationale behind targeting oliguria reversal – achieving and maintaining urine output above a previously defined threshold by additional fluid boluses – is often questioned. OBJECTIVE: We assessed whether restrictive fluid management had an effect on oliguria, acute renal failure (ARF) and fluid intake. We also investigated whether targ... περισσότερα »

Vitamin D pathway gene polymorphisms as predictors of hepatitis C virus-related mixed cryoglobulinemia

Heterosynaptic modulation of evoked synaptic potentials in layer II of the entorhinal cortex by activation of the parasubiculum.

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοPhysiology by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 32 δευτερόλεπτα
The superficial layers of the entorhinal cortex receive sensory and associational cortical inputs, and provide the hippocampus with the majority of its cortical sensory input. The parasubiculum, which receives input from multiple hippocampal subfields, sends it single major output projection to layer II of the entorhinal cortex, suggesting that it may modulate processing of synaptic inputs to the entorhinal cortex. Indeed, stimulation of the parasubiculum can enhance entorhinal responses to synaptic input from the piriform cortex in vivo. Theta EEG activity contributes to spatial ...περισσότερα »

Ubiquitin ligase Nedd4-2 modulates Kv1.3 current amplitude and ion channel protein targeting

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοPhysiology by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 32 δευτερόλεπτα
Voltage-dependent potassium channels (Kv) go beyond the stabilization of the resting potential, and regulate biochemical pathways, intracellular signaling, and detect energy homeostasis. Because targeted deletion and pharmacological block of the Kv1.3 channel protein produces marked changes in metabolism, resistance to diet-induced obesity, and changes in olfactory structure and function, this investigation explored Nedd4-2-mediated ubiquitination and degradation to regulate Kv1.3 channel density. Heterologous co-expression of Nedd4-2 ligase and Kv1.3 in HEK 293 cells reduced Kv1....περισσότερα »

Spontaneous Activations Follow a Common Developmental Course Across Primary Sensory Areas in Mouse Neocortex

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοPhysiology by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 32 δευτερόλεπτα
Spontaneous propagation of spiking within the local neocortical circuits in mature primary sensory areas is highly non-random, engaging specific sets of interconnected and functionally-related neurons. These spontaneous activations promise insight into neocortical structure and function, but their properties in the first two weeks of perinatal development are incompletely characterized. Previously we have found that there is a minimal numerical sample, on the order of 400 cells, necessary to fully capture mature neocortical circuit dynamics. Therefore we maximized our numerical sa... περισσότερα »

Knockout of the BK {beta}4 subunit promotes a functional coupling of BK channels and ryanodine receptors that mediate a fAHP-induced increase in excitability

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοPhysiology by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 32 δευτερόλεπτα
BK channels are large conductance calcium- and voltage-activated potassium channels with diverse properties. Knockout of the accessory BK β4 subunit in hippocampus dentate gyrus granule neurons causes BK channels to change properties from slow-gated type II channels to fast-gated, type I channels that sharpen the action potential, increase the fast-afterhyperpolarization amplitude, and increase spike frequency. Here we studied the calcium channels that contribute to fast-gated BK channel activation and increased excitability of β4 knockout neurons. By utilizing pharmacological bloc...περισσότερα »

The influence of the contractile properties of muscle on motor unit firing rates during a moderate contraction intensity in vivo

Rare human nerve growth factor beta (NGFB) mutation reveals relationship between C afferent density and acute pain evaluation.

Brain derived neurotrophic factor differentially modulates excitability of two classes of hippocampal output neurons

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοPhysiology by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 32 δευτερόλεπτα
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays an important role in hippocampus-dependent learning and memory. Canonically, this has been ascribed to an enhancing effect on neuronal excitability and synaptic plasticity in the CA1 region. However, it is the pyramidal neurons in the subiculum that form the primary efferent pathways conveying hippocampal information to other areas of the brain, and yet the effect of BDNF on these neurons has remained unexplored. We present new data that BDNF regulates neuronal excitability and cellular plasticity in a much more complex manner than pr...περισσότερα »

Before, the effect of the graphene support on the properties of the metal cluster was investigated. The interaction between the metal cluster and the graphene sheet takes place mainly through W atoms, which form up to three bonds with the support. Interaction energies are in the range from 0.6 to 1.5 eV. An amount of charge of about 0.4–0.5 e \(^-\) is transferred from the cluster to the support. Geometric ... περισσότερα »
