Balloon Catheter Dilation of the Frontal Sinus Ostium
The decision to operate on the frontal sinus is based on persistent symptoms that have been refractory to appropriate medical therapy with associated radiographic evidence of disease by computed tomography. There is currently no evidence to support operating on radiographically negative frontal sinuses, regardless of the availability of technology or site of service options. There… Continue reading Balloon Catheter Dilation of the Frontal Sinus Ostium
Standard Endoscopic Approaches in Frontal Sinus Surgery
The mainstay of frontal sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis is to achieve and maintain an adequate frontal outflow tract. Using a stepwise approach and identifying critical endoscopic anatomic landmarks, to minimize complications and obtain long-term good endoscopic surgical results, should achieve this. The goal is to relieve the patient’s symptoms, restore functional mucociliary flow, achieve… Continue reading Standard Endoscopic Approaches in Frontal Sinus Surgery
Evaluation and Decision Making in Frontal Sinus Surgery
Management of frontal sinusitis can be challenging for even the most experienced otolaryngologists. A thorough understanding of the anatomy and pathophysiology of the frontal sinus is essential to properly manage disease affecting the frontal sinus. Being able to distinguish acute viral from acute bacterial and acute from chronic sinusitis is crucial because these distinctions guide… Continue reading Evaluation and Decision Making in Frontal Sinus Surgery

Functional Diversity of Cytotoxic tRNase/immunity Protein Complexes from Burkholderia pseudomallei Protein Structure and Folding
Contact-dependent growth inhibition (CDI) is a wide-spread mechanism of inter-bacterial competition. CDI+ bacteria deploy large CdiA effector proteins, which carry variable C-terminal toxin domains (CdiA-CT). CDI+ cells also produce CdiI immunity proteins that specifically neutralize cognate CdiA-CT toxins to prevent auto-inhibition. Here, we present the crystal structure of the CdiA-CT/CdiIE479 toxin/immunity protein complex from Burkholderia… Continue reading Functional Diversity of Cytotoxic tRNase/immunity Protein Complexes from Burkholderia pseudomallei Protein Structure and Fo... περισσότερα »

Registration of cone beam computed tomography data and intraoral surface scans – A prerequisite for guided implant surgery with CAD/CAM drilling guides
Abstract Objectives Guided implant surgery (GIS) is performed with drilling guides that are produced on the virtual tooth model using CAD/CAM technology. The prerequisite for this workflow is the alignment of patients cone beam computed tomography CBCT and surface scan (registration). Dental restorations may cause deteriorating imaging artifacts in CBCT data, which in turn can have an impact on the registration process. The influence of the user and the preprocessing of data and of image artifacts on the registration accuracy were examined. Material and Methods CBCT data and int... περισσότερα »
PIN1 Suppresses the Hepatic Differentiation of Pulp Stem Cells via Wnt3a
This study aimed to investigate the role of PIN1 on the hepatic differentiation of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) and its signaling pathway, as well as the potential therapeutic effects of hDPSC transplantation and PIN1 inhibition on CCl4 (carbon tetrachloride)–induced liver fibrosis in mice. The in vitro results showed that hepatic differentiation was suppressed by infection with adenovirus-PIN1 and promoted by PIN1 inhibitor juglone via the downregulation of Wnt3a and β-catenin. Compared with treatment with either hDPSC transplantation or juglone alone, the combination of... περισσότερα »

The most common primary tumors of the frontal sinus are osteomas and inverted papillomas, although a variety of other tumors involving this space have been reported. With the advent of new surgical techniques and instrumentation, an endoscopic approach to this region has become feasible. The preoperative assessment and decision making must take into account the complexity of frontal sinus anatomy, tumor type, tumor location, and associated attachments. These procedures allow adequate visualization, tumor removal, and postoperative monitoring, and preserve fairly normal sinus funct... περισσότερα »

Endoscopic sinus surgery is an effective intervention at improving quality of life for patients with medically refractory chronic rhinosinusitis. The evidence supporting frontal sinusotomy is limited to single institution case series. However, the data for Draf IIa frontal sinusotomy do demonstrate that most patients experience lasting frontal sinus patency on postoperative endoscopic examination and improvements in quality of life. Salvage endoscopic frontal sinus surgery via a Draf III shows high rates of neo-ostium patency and subjective improvements in symptoms at a 2-year time... περισσότερα »

Rhinosinusitis affects an estimated 1 in 7 adults in the United States. Otolaryngologists are intimately involved in the care of patients with rhinosinusitis and other upper airway inflammatory conditions through medical management and procedures such as endoscopic sinus surgery. The frontal sinus is considered the most difficult of the paranasal sinuses to manage. Frontal sinusitis is typically treated medically, with surgical interventions reserved for the most recalcitrant cases. Both private practitioners and academic physicians manage frontal sinusitis. http://ift.tt/2acKn7g

Inter-genomic DNA Exchanges and Homoeologous Gene Silencing Shaped the Nascent Allopolyploid Coffee Genome (Coffea arabica L.)
Allopolyploidization is a biological process that has played a major role in plant speciation and evolution. Genomic changes are common consequences of polyploidization, but their dynamics over time are still poorly understood. *Coffea arabica*, a recently formed allotetraploid, was chosen to study genetic changes that accompany allopolyploid formation. Both RNA-seq and DNA-seq data were generated from two *C. arabica* genetically distant accessions. Genomic structural variation was investigated using *C. canephora*, one of its diploid progenitors, as reference genome. The fate of... περισσότερα »
A Genomic Analysis of Factors Driving lincRNA Diversification: Lessons from Plants
Transcriptomic analyses from across eukaryotes indicate that most of the genome is transcribed at some point in the developmental trajectory of an organism. One class of these transcripts is termed long intergenic noncoding RNAs (lincRNAs). Recently, attention has focused on understanding the evolutionary dynamics of lincRNAs, particularly their conservation within genomes. Here, we take a comparative genomic and phylogenetic approach to uncover factors influencing lincRNA emergence and persistence in the plant family Brassicaceae, to which A. thaliana belongs. Parasomnia overlap disorder (POD) is the coexistence of non−rapid eye movement (NREM) parasomnia (eg, sleepwalking, confusional arousals) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in the same individual [1]. POD can be idiopathic or associated with conditions such as narcolepsy, Moebius syndrome, and brain structural lesions [1-5]. In contrast to idiopathic RBD, the risk of phenoconversion to a neurodegenerative disease is unknown in POD [5]. A Pragmatic Approach to Patch Testing Atopic Dermatitis Patients: Clinical Recommendations Based on Expert Consensus Opinion
Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology Now by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 33 δευτερόλεπτα
[image: image]Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) may complicate the clinical course of atopic dermatitis (AD), and patch testing remains the criterion standard for diagnosing ACD. To date, there have been no guidelines or consensus recommendations on when and how to patch test individuals with AD. Failure to patch test when appropriate may result in overlooking an important and potentially curable complicating comorbidity. In this article, we present consensus recommendations regarding when to perform patch testing in the AD patient, best practices, and common pitfalls. Patch testing... περισσότερα »

Perfusion-related stimuli for compensatory lung growth following pneumonectomy
Following pneumonectomy (PNX), two separate mechanical forces act on the remaining lung: parenchymal stress caused by lung expansion, and microvascular distension and shear caused by increased perfusion. We previously showed that parenchymal stress and strain explain approximately one-half of overall compensation; the remainder was presumptively attributed to perfusion-related factors. In this study, we directly tested the hypothesis that perturbation of regional pulmonary perfusion modulates post-PNX lung growth. Modeling Eye-Head Gaze Shifts in Multiple Contexts without Motor Planning
During gaze shifts, the eyes and head collaborate to rapidly capture a target (saccade) and fixate it. Accordingly, models of gaze shift control should imbed both saccadic and fixation modes and a mechanism for switching between them. We demonstrate a model in which the eye and head platforms are driven by a shared gaze error signal. To limit the number of free parameters we implement a model reduction approach in which steady-state cerebellar effects at each of its projection sites are lumped with the parameter of that site. The model topology is consistent with anatomy and neuro... περισσότερα »
Vestibular nucleus neurons respond to hindlimb movement in the conscious cat
The limbs constitute the sole interface with the ground during most waking activities in mammalian species; it is therefore expected that somatosensory inputs from the limbs provide important information to the central nervous system for balance control. In the decerebrate cat model, the activity of a subset of neurons in the vestibular nuclei (VN) was previously shown to be modulated by hindlimb movement. However, decerebration can profoundly alter the effects of sensory inputs on the activity of brainstem neurons, resulting in epiphenomenal responses. Thus, prior to this study i... περισσότερα »
Contribution of synchronized GABAergic neurons to dopaminergic neuron firing and bursting
In the ventral tegmental area (VTA), interactions between dopamine (DA) and -Aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurons are critical for regulating DA neuron activity, and thus DA efflux. To provide a mechanistic explanation of how GABA neurons influence DA neuron firing, we developed a circuit model of the VTA. The model is based on feed-forward inhibition and recreates canonical features of the VTA neurons. Simulations revealed that GABAR stimulation can differentially influence the firing pattern of the DA neuron depending on the level of synchronization among GABA neurons. Asynchronous ... περισσότερα »
The Ionic Mechanism of Membrane Potential Oscillations and Membrane Resonance in Striatal LTS Interneurons
Striatal low-threshold spiking (LTS) interneurons spontaneously transition to a depolarized, oscillating state similar to that seen after sodium channels are blocked. In the depolarized state, whether spontaneous or induced by sodium channel blockade, the neurons express a 3 - 7 Hz oscillation and membrane impedance resonance in the same frequency range. The membrane potential oscillation and membrane resonance are expressed in the same voltage range (> -40 mV). We identified and recorded from LTS interneurons in striatal slices from a mouse that expressed GFP under the control of... περισσότερα »
Understanding location- and feature-based processing along the human intraparietal sulcus
Based on different cognitive tasks and mapping methods, the human intraparietal sulcus (IPS) has been subdivided according to multiple different organizational schemes. The presence of topographically organized regions throughout IPS indicates a strong location-based processing in this brain region. However, visual short-term memory (VSTM) studies have shown that while a region in the inferior IPS region (inferior IPS) is involved in object individuation and selection based on location, a region in the superior IPS (superior IPS) primarily encodes and stores object featural inform... περισσότερα »
Non-invasive brain stimulation enhances sustained muscle contractions by reducing neuromuscular fatigue: Implications for rehabilitation
Neuromuscular fatigue is due, in part, to central processes that involves failure of the nervous system to drive muscles maximally during exercise. A recent study by Abdelmoula and colleagues (Abdelmoula A, Baudry S and Duchateau J. Neuroscience 322 94-103, 2016) have shown that non-invasive brain stimulation can mitigate neuromuscular fatigue; however, does not rely on enhanced corticospinal excitability of the primary motor cortex. These findings are of high clinical importance as rehabilitative therapies are necessary to mitigate neuromuscular fatigue for patients with central ... περισσότερα »
Developmental Regulation of Inhibitory Synaptic Currents in the Dorsal Motor Nucleus of the Vagus in the Rat
Prior immunohistochemical studies have demonstrated that at early postnatal timepoints, central vagal neurons receive both glycinergic and GABAergic inhibitory inputs. Functional studies have demonstrated, however, that adult vagal efferent motoneurons receive only inhibitory GABAergic synaptic inputs, suggesting loss of glycinergic inhibitory neurotransmission during postnatal development. The purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that the loss of glycinergic inhibitory synapses occurs in the immediate postnatal period. Whole cell patch clamp recordings were made... περισσότερα »
The central pattern generator underlying swimming in Dendronotus iris: A simple half-center network oscillator with a twist
The nudibranch mollusc, *Dendronotus iris*, swims by rhythmically flexing its body from left to right. Here we identified a bilaterally-represented interneuron, Si3, that provides strong excitatory drive to the previously identified Si2, forming a half-center oscillator, which functions as the central pattern generator (CPG) underlying swimming. As with Si2, Si3 inhibited its contralateral counterpart and exhibited rhythmic bursts in left-right alternation during the swim motor pattern. Si3 burst almost synchronously with the contralateral Si2 and was coactive with the efferent im... περισσότερα »
Distinct neural mechanisms for spatially lateralized and spatially global visual working memory representations.
Visual working memory (VWM) allows humans to actively maintain a limited amount of information. Whereas previous electrophysiological studies have found that lateralized event-related potentials (ERPs) track the maintenance of information in VWM, recent imaging experiments have shown that spatially global representations can be read out using the activity across visual cortex. The goal of the present study was to determine whether both lateralized and spatially global electrophysiological signatures coexist. We first show that it is possible to simultaneously measure lateralized E... περισσότερα »
The relevance of the irrelevant: Attention and task-set adaptation in prematurely born adults
Being born preterm (PT, before week 37 of gestation) with very low birth weight (VLBW, < 1500 g) is associated with increased risk of perinatal brain injuries and compromised brain development that can have negative long-term consequences for cognitive function (Løhaugen et al., 2010; Nosarti et al., 2012). Increased prevalence of problems in the domains of executive attention and learning are particularly notable in PT/VLBW populations (Mulder et al., 2009; Murray et al., 2014; van der Weijer-Bergsma et al., 2008). from Physiology via xlomafota13 on Inoreader http://ift.tt/2a0cRzP
