Unexpected case of sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the submandibular salivary gland

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant neoplasm of the salivary gland.1 Its clinical presentation is highly variable from slow growing to locally aggressive and highly metastatic.1 There are at least eight possible variants: unicystic, sclerosing, onocytic, clear cell, spindle cell, aggressive goblet cell, psammomatous, and sebaceous types.1 After an extensive review of published work, we found just four documented cases of sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the submandibular salivary gland,2–4 so we thought that a description of another case would be of value.
