Prevalence and incidence of hidradenitis suppurativa: An exercise on indirect estimation from psoriasis data

Abstract

while hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is recently attracting much attention, uncertainty surrounds the actual extent of the occurrence of this disease. A comprehensive review of the epidemiology of HS¹ reported data ranging from <0.1%^2,3 to 8%⁴, allowing the Authors to conclude that the prevalence of HS may approach that of psoriasis¹. Starting from this statement, we compared occurrence data of HS with those of psoriasis in a large clinical data set collected in a dermatological reference center, to provide a "ballpark" estimate of prevalence and incidence of HS in Italy.
