Abstract: A case of characteristic rhinocerebral mucormycosis is reported. A 35-year-old male presented with dry mouth, polydipsia and weight loss for more than 2 years, and bilateral nasal obstruction and left facial swelling for 20 days. Physical examination showed swelling of large area of facial skin, which was dark purple in color; the left lower eyelid, left ala nasi and left infraorbital region were swollen, ulcerated and crusted, dark red bloody fluid exudated when pressed. Black crusts could be seen in the left nasal cavity. A large number of fungal hyphae were detected by microscopic and histopathological examinations. Fungal culture and DNA sequencing demonstrated the hyphae to be Rhizopus oryzae. After effective control of blood glucose, early use of amphotericin B and surgical debridement, the condition of the patient improved.
